Lass o’ Pairts is a performance exhibition that tells stories of real life marvels of the past, using their brilliance to explore the imagined wonders of the future. This is a performance that stands on the shoulders of giants - the female scientists and space explorers that uncovered so very much of what little we know about the universe.
The exhibition revolves around eight artworks about eight women and their space discoveries. Every piece is created by one of the eight women artists engaged with the project for over two years, and is reflective of their diverse practices. Each artefact is interactive in their own varied way - some pieces are intensely tactile, others auditorily stimulating, still more involve a digital or visual art interaction that audience members engage with individually. One artefact even takes you to Mars!
The LOP exhibition is hosted by enthusiastic Time Travellers from the planet Ga-i-kee, who have come to earth on a pilgrimage of sorts, paying homage to the inspirational Lass O'Pairts women (so named in honour of Scottish star cataloguer Wilhemina Fleming). Our adventurers, having been collecting these artefacts for some while, are over the moon with enthusiasm to show them off.
Whilst being able to speak many Earth languages, the Gai-i-kee have their own and are more than happy to teach you a few.
Their hope is to inspire Humans to make their own space discoveries, real or imagined, whilst learning and understanding about the galaxies that we all live in.
They look forward to welcoming you on Ga-i-kee in the future, whenever that may be...
Artworks include tactile dioramas that move, photographic slides, moving images, an alien soundscape, a digital mobile game, a noisy retro space console, eccentric meteors and visual artworks.
The performance is both educational and fun, and is aimed at all ages. Originally developed with a Without Walls Blueprint grant it has been created, devised, rehearsed and performed as a work-in-progress piece during the pandemic with Creative Scotland funding.
